How to Care for Sterling Silver and Gemstone Jewellery

A favourite necklace deserves a little care between wears. Silver, plated finishes and gemstones respond differently to cleaning, so the best routine starts with knowing what your piece is made from. Here is a practical guide to keeping your Aaravita jewellery looking its best.

Choose a cleaning routine that suits both the metal finish and the stone.

Make jewellery the last thing you put on

Apply perfume, lotions and hair products before putting on your jewellery, and let them dry first. Remove pieces before swimming, showering, exercising or using household cleaning products. These small habits reduce contact with moisture, chemicals and perspiration.

Start with a soft cloth

After wearing a piece, gently wipe it with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid scrubbing around stones or catching the cloth on claws, bails and chain links. Check the clasp and setting while you clean; if a stone feels loose or a link is damaged, set the piece aside for inspection.

Treat plated finishes gently

Gold-plated silver has a surface layer that needs gentler handling than unplated silver. Avoid abrasive pastes, toothpaste and vigorous polishing. A silver-polishing cloth or dip is not automatically suitable for a plated piece or its gemstones. Use a plain soft cloth first, and ask for product-specific advice before treating tarnish.

Give turquoise and composite stones extra care

The Gemological Institute of America notes that turquoise can be affected by heat, chemicals and cosmetics, and should never be cleaned with steam or an ultrasonic cleaner. Treatments can also change how a stone responds to cleaning.

Aaravita’s Boho Heart Spiny Oyster Turquoise Necklace is listed as a composite of stone and shell materials. Do not assume advice for a single untreated gemstone applies to the whole pendant. Avoid soaking, solvents and aggressive cleaners; ask us for cleaning guidance for this particular piece.

Store each piece separately

Use individual soft pouches or separate compartments in a dry jewellery box. Fasten necklaces before storing them to help reduce tangles, and keep chains away from ring settings that could catch them. Keep your box away from damp bathrooms, direct sunlight and heat.
